I’m honored to have this opportunity. The Pocahontas County Public Library, of which Hillsboro Library is a branch, was the 2003 Rural Library of the Year in the United States. Hillsboro is also the birthplace of Pearl S. Buck, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, “The Good Earth.” I can think of no better place — especially on Earth Day — to have a community discussion about the vital roles grassroots activists play in preserving and protecting Appalachia.
