LENOIR, N.C. – It could be said that Patrick Crouch, Terry Edwards and Bob Kogut are getting old. I can see how one might think so after looking at Terry’s long gray beard, Patrick’s thinning hair and Bob’s graying head.
But they would be wrong. No, these three Caldwell County treasures, probably nearly 200 years old as a trio, are not getting old. They are aging to perfection. Based on what I experienced this past Wednesday night at Liquid Roots Brewing Company, there is no question they are Top Shelf musicians that continue to age well.
Gathering there as part of Patrick’s “Paddy’s Something in the Water” series, it is the most enjoyable three hours I’ve had listening to music for as long as I can remember. All three, who I count as friends, were authentic, relaxed and umbilically connected to the audience.
For the uninitiated, Patrick begins the sessions with an interview of one musician. They chat, play, and share stories like old friends on a front porch. After a break, Patrick repeats the process with his other guest. After one last break, the three get together and have a good old jam.
As the trio completed this week’s jam, two patrons turned to one another in silence and finally mouthed, together, “Wow!” That reaction was universal. Patrons and musicians mingled on, telling more stories. Stories that one day will likely be played on string instruments in a living room, on a back porch, and eventually right back at Liquid Roots – all without ever leaving Caldwell County, which is part of the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina.
Paddy is right. He’s been saying it for decades – since the Second Annual Traditional Musicians Showcase. There’s something in the water of Caldwell County, water that produces musicians, stories and collaborations that continue on – not only because of tradition, but because of the determination by the likes of Paddy, Terry and Bob to age well. In doing so, each man is an inspiration to others seeking meaning in whatever season of life they might be.
Patrick’s next “Paddy’s Something in the Water,” at Liquid Roots will be Jan. 31 at 6:30, featuring Roger Miller and Dwight McGlynn. Details will follow later in the month. If you see Patrick and you don’t get his email, ask to be added to his list. And as always, you can subscribe to the Appalachian Chronicle or listen to WNCW to learn more about the rich music scene in Western North Carolina.
