LENOIR, N.C. – Today at Grassroots Appalachia, we’ll be having fun as we learn. It is the second day of our three-day Opening: “An Exploration: Considering the Conditions Favorable for Community Life.” Tomorrow, we will complete the Opening with a focus on Caldwell County writers and books. The exhibit continues through Sept. 5.

Today

At 11 a.m., Karin Davidson will be weaving, teaching and giving others an opportunity to have hands-on experience. The results will be a community tapestry.

At 2 p.m. Gretchen Griffith will be teaching a Fly Tying mini lesson and discussing her book, “Southern Fly Tyers.” She will be joined with special guests David Anders and James Henson.

At 6:30 p.m. Amber Shoemake will be teaching the use of mixed media, with participants leaving with a personal art piece as well as further knowledge about the beauty of flowers.

Thursday

Beginning at 11:30, the Foothills Writing Group will introduce themselves and share some of their work.

From 2 – 3:30 p.m. Gretchen Griffith will join us again. She will be speaking on her books about women, her knowledge of some of the county’s influential women of the past, and tying the importance of women to the Conditions Favorable for Community Living.

We end the day with a multi-media presentation from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., as Tony Deal will be reading from and discussing his book– “But that’s not true!” He will be joined by the illustrator of the book, Tonja Smith.

Finally, throughout the week, visitors will have an opportunity to purchase art, crafts, books and Our State magazine as well, as we also operate an Appalachian Fair Trade Arts & Crafts store within the Gallery.
